The American Dream

Many of us are scratching our collective heads as we view what is happening in our country today. Job losses continue at an alarming rate. Skyrocketing taxes. Government programs that will bankrupt our children. Our government is systematically selling off our children’s future with the enormous national debt load that now exceeds $40,000 per family in the United States.

Uncertainty  is the headline and the days of working until retirement with a company are over. It has been reported that the average American worker will work for more than 12 companies in his/her career. While opportunities may present themselves the fact is that when we work for someone else we are merely a number and can be discarded without any regard to our contribution, service, or family.

I have personally felt the sting of a layoff, not once but twice in the past two years. In both situations I was a top producer and performer but my contribution and standard of excellence had little with my longevity. I was simply a number and when global economic forces seize control of our economy, we are all at risk.

It got me thinking of how I can control my own future. I did everything I thought was correct. I went to school and received a great education and went on to earn an MBA in graduate school. I was dedicated to my employer. I raised a great family. While family and school were in my control, unfortunately, employment was not.

That is when I decided to take a leap of faith and work for myself. It is the only thing that I can control. I wanted to become part of the fabric that is the American Dream! America was built on the backs of hard-working, dedicated, innovative entrepreneurs who have made this country great for more than 200 years. I want to build and leave a legacy for my children and grandchildren. I want to own my piece of the American Dream.

Today, we are bombarded with a litany of  “money making systems” and “get rich schemes”, most of which are simply bait and switch, smoke and mirrors, and just plain do not work. There as never been a substitute for hard-work and there never will be. Money does not grow on some magical tree and the lottery is not a way to financial prosperity.
